Neighborhood Park Improvements

The city of Corpus Christi has many small neighborhood parks located throughout the city. The majority of these parks provide excellent recreational areas, are well matained, and most of them are 100% grass covered. However, they are generally not utilized to the greatest extent.

The intent of the funds generated from this event, SK8 Del Sol, is to support enhancing the existing neighborhood park areas with “multi-use concrete areas”, better know commonly as “slabs”.

The concept for these areas came about as a result of the skatepark that was built in Cole Park. Without a doubt it is an excellent skateboarding facility and heavly utilized by the skateboarding community. But, due to the size of Corpus Christi it is not readily accessible to many individuals, especially youths, which would like to take advantage of a skateboarding area. Flour Bluff is at least 10 miles away and the south side is almost just as far.

These “multi-use concrete areas” are basically flat and smooth concrete pads or slabs. Installing these would enhance the current neighborhood park facilities by providing a safe area, away from traffic and/or pedestrians, that could be used by individuals of varied sporting interests; skateboarders, inline skaters, roller skaters, bmx riders, street hockey, stick ball, basketball and any other urban type sport activity that requires a hard flat surface.

The major complication in creating these areas is the ongoing problem, lack of funds. Or simply put – in this current economic situation the city does not have money available for this purpose.

The money generated by SK8 Del Sol, and other upcoming events, will be used to provide funds to help create these “multi-use concrete areas” in neighborhood parks throughout the city.

Straight Skate has been continually working with the city of Corpus Christi for the past four years to create these "slabs" in our existing parks. We strongly believe that these type of facility are much needed and will provide a safe and convenient play areas for the children of this city.

We strongly encourage you to contact your local city council representative or the parks department and express your support for this concept. This is one area that Corpus can take a national lead and provide the youth of our city with park facilities that will be highly utilized and require little or no upkeep.

Your attendance and participation in this event is greatly appreciated.
